After leaving the protagonist's bedroom, there's a door to the outside on the right (at the end of the hallway). Once outside, you can open the map and travel to any unlocked location.

I tried that. The map opens, but the game acts like the map doesn't exist. I tapped all over the screen while the map was open, but nothing happened. Then I closed the map, and I was back inside.
