Rules of Yono Rummy:

Number of cards and players. In Indian rummy, each player gets 13 cards from a standard deck. The game is usually played by 2 to 6 players. Depending on the number of players, several decks are used: for 2 players – two decks (104 cards + jokers), and for 3-6 players – three decks (156 cards + jokers). All cards are shuffled and dealt equally, the remaining cards form a stack to be picked up.

Game Objective. The main objective is to be the first to make a set of valid combinations from all your 13 cards and make an announcement (laying out the cards). Combinations are of two types: sequences and sets.

Asequence is 3 or more cards of the same suit in order (e.g. 5♣-6♣-7♣). Sequences are also called runes or runs.

Aset is 3 (less often 4) cards of the same rank but different suits (e.g. J♣-J♥-J♠). Sets are also known as trios (three of the same) or groups.

Jokers. In addition to the basic cards, the game involves jokers. Each deck has two printed jokers, in addition, a random card may be declared an extra joker (wild card) at the beginning of the game. Jokers can substitute for any missing card in a combination. However, there is a limitation: although the joker makes combinations easier to collect, at least one sequence must be ‘clean’, i.e. without a joker. For example, the combination 8♥-9♥-10♥ is a clean sequence, and 8♥-9♥-Joker is an unclean sequence. The presence of at least one clean sequence is a prerequisite for victory.

Game progression. Rummy is a game with the mechanics of ‘take a card – discard a card’ in a circle. Each player on his turn takes one card from either the closed deck or the top card from the discard pile, then discards one unwanted card into the open pile. This leaves the player with 13 cards in hand again. Players keep a close eye on their cards and the cards taken by their opponents. The game continues clockwise (in some variants – anti-clockwise) until one of the participants collects all the cards in the required combinations and announces it by placing the cards on the table.

Announcement and scoring. When a player considers that he has fulfilled the conditions (all the required combinations have been collected, including at least two sequences, of which one is clean), he may declare the end of the game on his turn. To do this, he lays out the combinations openly. If the combinations are checked and found to be correct, this player is declared the winner of the round. The other participants in this case get penalty points for unused cards in hand: usually the face value of a card means its points (2-9 in value, pictures – 10 points each, ace – also 10 or 1 point by agreement), jokers do not give points. The less points in hand – the better for the losers, so in the course of the game it is worth getting rid of ‘heavy’ cards. In some rammy variants, games are played until a certain number of points or a certain number of hands are dealt, after which the overall winner is determined.

Example of a move: suppose a player has a sequence ♠7-♠8-♠9 (clean), a set of ♥K-♦K-♣K, another sequence ♣Q-♣K-♣A and the remaining card is a joker, which he used instead of ♦J for the sequence ♦10-♦J-♦Q. In this situation, he has the conditions fulfilled (two sequences, one without the joker) and can declare the game over by laying out all combinations. If other players have uncollected cards left, they are awarded points for those cards.
