Need For Speed Payback is a popular racing game where players can choose from three characters and experience different storylines. Gameplay of Need For Speed Payback:

Need for Speed Payback is a racing game set in the open world environment of Fortune Valley; a fictional version of Las Vegas, Nevada. It is focused on "action driving" and has three playable characters (each with different sets of skills) working together to pull off action movie-like sequences. The game features an offline single-player mode. Unlike the 2015 Need for Speed reboot, Payback features a 24-hour day-night cycle. Numerous activities are available throughout Fortune Valley for players to complete, including speed traps, speed zones, long jumps, billboard smashes, and drift zones, and players can collect casino chips scattered across the map.

Events include street races and drag races, both handled by Tyler, off-road races and drift events, both handled by Mac, and runner work, which is handled by Jess, all of which rewards players with bank and REP. Before starting an event, "side bets" are given to players which give them extra bank in exchange for some if they complete it. Unlike previous installments, where police chases are a staple of the series, players do not accumulate "heat" after completing events, and police cars do not roam the map in search of players. Police chases are instead triggered by scripted events during the campaign and pursuit boxes found around Fortune Valley. Previously, Rav was able to contact the player regarding abandoned cars scattered across the map during a given time period, which would also trigger police chases; if the player manages to return to a safehouse with the car, they will be able to keep it. This made the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor playable, the first time since Need for Speed Rivals that a police car was a playable vehicle. Abandoned car rotations ended shortly before Need for Speed Heat's release.

The player's garage is divided into different racing disciplines, which include racing, drifting, drag builds, off-roading, and runner work, with speedcross being added in a post-launch update. As such, cars will need to be purchased from their respective dealerships. Derelict cars are scattered across the map, and obtaining all parts will allow the player to restore it; a derelict car can be restored further into a "superbuild" made for a specific discipline. The player starts with a limited amount of car storage space, but unlocking all the garages with bank will allow them to store unlimited cars. The game's upgrade system moves away from buying parts outright in the previous title to cards that may feature a boost to a car's trait(s). Matching three or six cards with the same brand will result in a bonus being applied. Cards are obtained from "shipments" or being bought outright from one of the Tune-Up-Shops available in the map. Vehicle customization is mostly the same as in the 2015 title, though new vanity items will need to be obtained through "shipments" instead of being bought outright. Payback features a total of 74 vehicles with downloadable contents. Toyota, Scion and Ferrari are not involved in the game due to licensing issues. However, the Subaru BRZ appears in the game. Aston Martin, Audi, Buick, Jaguar, Koenigsegg, Land Rover, Mercury, Pagani, and Plymouth make their return after their absence from the 2015 installment, while Alfa Romeo, Infiniti, Mini and Pontiac were added via downloadable content.

There’s a way to fiddle with Speed cards: If you want to look at all the Speed Cards on your car, head back to the garage and go to Performance Customisation. In here, you’ll see all your equipped Speed Cards and if you select an individual Card you can see any others that have been hidden away by better ones. In here, you can fiddle with your layout and trade in any cards that you don’t need anymore. Don’t forget, if you match three of the same brand of Speed Card - or even better, six - you’ll get even better stats and perks from your deck. 

You can only change your car at a specific race or in the garage: It’s worth your while unlocking the four garages that are dotted across Payback’s map, and not just so that you can store more cars. They actually act as a free fast-travel option, halving the time it takes to whizz across the map for that one specific race you want to replay. But also, it’s one of the only ways you can switch between characters and cars. Travel to one of your garages and you’ll be able to get out of that VW Golf GTI you’ve been using since hour one, and get behind one of your other wheels for a little something different.You can also change your car by going to an alternative race quest line - such as runner instead of drifter - to open up your garage and look at the goodies inside.

You have to unlock the customisation options for your cars: One of my favourite things about a Need for Speed game is making my car look utterly ridiculous with decals everywhere, utterly lurid paint jobs and other such adornments. I want the kind of car that would make your gran spit out her tea as it drove past the window. But unfortunately, to do that in Need for Speed Payback, you’ll need to do a bit of grinding first. Every single element of your body kit customisation options (found within the Visual Customisations tab in the garage) is locked behind gameplay achievements.Want to change your rear fenders? Buy a second garage first. How about some new headlights? Build a car from Derelict parts first - not an easy task. Want to swap out your wing mirrors? Better complete three Speed Trap activities with two-star ratings first. 

There’s a definite grind: That’s just one part of the grind when it comes to Need for Speed Payback. Money is incredibly slow and difficult to earn, especially when a race earns you around $7,000 (if you don’t do all the side bets and stuff) but Speed Cards cost upwards of $11,000. Levelling up your cars for the late stage races eventually becomes a chore, as you’ll have to retread your steps through earlier races in order to save up enough dosh to level up your car.

The car selection and driving mechanics are definitely the highlights for me handling feels smooth and satisfying. Graphically, the game looks great and holds up well. However, be warned that the story is quite short, and if you're just looking for a casual "pick up and play" experience, you might get bored quickly.But if you're an achievement hunter like me, you'll actually enjoy it! It's fast-paced, engaging, and provides a decent challenge for completionists. Worth a shot if you're aiming for that 100%.

Although its likely my favourite need for speed game in the franchise, the handling on the cars on turns (specifically speaking about drifting) are very clunky. Other than that its great, good graphics, good cars, decent storyline although it repeats quite a lot, and works just fine on a nearly decade old laptop with an Intel core i7 in it. Recommended.

I don’t usually write reviews for games, but I feel like this one deserves it. I’ve played through this game three different times over the nine years it’s been out, and every time I come back to it, it’s just as fun as it was the first time. It’s definitely one of my favorite NFS games of all time.The story is amazing. Instead of having to make a basic, bland character, you play between three different ones, and they all have their own personalities. It makes it feel like you’re actually playing the story as a team instead of one character doing everything. The story is a decent length; I’ve bought this game three times so I can replay it, and it has always taken over 14 hours each playthrough.The multiplayer in this game, to my knowledge, isn't great. I don’t really play it since I tried it on release and didn't enjoy it.The car list is really good; you get a solid set of options, and you earn a good amount of money from races to buy a lot of new cars. The car handling in this game is great! I enjoy the arcade, fast-paced racing. The cop chases are fun, too. I’m not saying they are as good as other NFS titles like *Most Wanted* (2005) or Heat, but they are definitely still good.The graphics look amazing, especially for a nine-year-old game. It still feels like I’m playing a modern title. The car upgrading system is nice, and I enjoy that it’s not too complex; I prefer driving over worrying about looking for a tune or researching upgrades. It’s legit: a bigger number on a part = faster. It’s very straightforward.The car customization is awesome too. Instead of having to level up to unlock certain parts, you just have to complete the challenges they set for each part you want to customize. You get all the options right from the jump after you complete the challenge.Overall, if you don’t play racing games but are willing to try one, this is an amazing game. Everything is very beginner-friendly, the cars handle great, and it has good graphics. If you have played other NFS titles but haven’t tried this one, I 1000% recommend it. It’s only about $8 USD on sale and on key sites and it’s definitely worth the price.The only con I have is the online multiplayer. It’s definitely more of a single-player game, in my opinion.
