Every room, every hallway, is deliberately dimly lit. You are equipped with nothing but a flashlight that can be manually charged by shaking it, an act that is both necessary and dangerous.

The need to shake the flashlight to charge is a small but consequential feature. This action creates a sound, and in Tattletail’s world, sound is a summon. Mama – the main threatening entity in the game is activated by sound.

The space is locked, there is no map, no HUD, all you have is spatial memory and dim light to find your way. Each night in the game is a test of both your spatial memory and your ability to master resources (flashlight, sound, and even your anxiety).

Feeding requires you to go to the kitchen, open the refrigerator, and wait for the “eating” process to complete. Charging requires placing Tattletail on the charging dock for a long enough time. Throughout Tattletail, you can pick up small plastic eggs (collectibles) that contain creepy items like dentures, hair, or moldy bread crumbs. There are 22 of them in total, and collecting them all unlocks a special ending. But they don’t come cheap.

Some eggs are located in locations that force you to go outside of the safe zone, or move while Mama is wandering around. Picking up eggs doesn’t grant any skills, doesn’t aid gameplay, and only serves to advance the story. The secret ending is only available if you collect enough eggs and complete all the tasks without dying, which pushes the boundaries of indie horror to a new level.

Kaleidoscope expansion

The Kaleidoscope expansion is a special chapter with a clear psychological horror feel. Tattletail in this version no longer functions as before, its behavior becomes distorted, its speech is repetitive, offensive, and it often quotes mismatched memories.
