But for those who have yet to chart a course, this apocalyptic archipelago may feel a bit daunting. Here are some general tips to keep in mind so you can keep an even keel (and your controllers intact).

Check out all islands. Not every island will have story beats, but enough will have gadgets and gizmos aplenty. In fact, skipping some of the optional islands will mean leaving some achievements in your wake. Be sure to shore up on every bit of land you see before heading onto the main events. Note: to keep this guide on the shorter side, we will only be listing story-important islands.

It’s the circle of fight. Highwater is a turn-based strategy game with scripted fights. This means that you can restart as many times as you like to learn the predictable patterns of all enemies. Think you’re losing this round? Trying again is only a restart away.

Be aware of your surroundings. Sometimes you’ll be up against baddies that are just a little too big to handle. When that’s the case, use the environment to your advantage! A fight that might take a lot of time and energy out of you may be resolved in one or two turns by simply utilizing the stuff just strewn about.

Companions come and go. Each ally that crosses your path has their own needs and desires to take care of, so don’t expect them to stick around for the entire ride. In fact, even Nikos will be absent from a fight or two for various reasons. Don’t get to comfy with any particular partner; instead, look forward to the new friends you’ll meet along the way.

Down but not out. If Nikos or any of his companions fall in battle, don’t sweat — they’re not gone nor forgotten. Even if you win the battle with a fallen comrade, they’ll have dusted themselves off by the time the victory screen fades to black and the next cutscene rolls in.

Player Comments:

I had a great few hours playing through Highwater. The graphics are good, the sounddesign is probably the best I've seen, and the combat and exploration are fun andstreamlined. I found the difficulty level to be well balanced: easy enough for newcomersto the genre, just hard enough for XCOM veterans to be challenged if they want to do aperfect run, and no penalties either way. Suggestion to devs: the very beginning is a bitoff-putting, I almost gave it up within the first five minutes and I would have missed outon a great game! In particular: the first long stretch of driving is boring, maybe start withan action sequence. Also, the white compass dots not disappearing after clearing up anarea makes it seem like something was missed. Finally, on the fighting: Nikos isdeadweight after the early game, maybe make him more of a true support. AndJosephine's blood lust is super fun to play, but maybe have more obstacles so she can'ttoo easily eviscerate 5 enemies in one turn.

This is a great little game. It's not long, which I think is fine. The writing is great, withplenty of literary and pop culture references that made me chuckle, even if some wentover my head. The radio station with original soundtrack was also excellent. The graphicsaren't super high-res but are decent. The turn-based battles are basically puzzles - thekey is to find the right tactics, and although with a few exceptions they aren't that hard Ienjoyed them trying to win them in the fewest turns. I was pleasantly surprised thatunlike all the other Netflix games I've played I found no bugs, and the game was stable -it didn't crash on me once. Some other reviewers have complained about bugs, so maybethey've all been fixed or maybe I was lucky!

I don't usually write reviews but this game is unbelievable. The animationand storyline and all the characters blew my mind and I can't think of asingle negative thing about it. I wish there was a second part to this becauseof how amazing this game is and I will never regret getting this game.
