Gameplay of Moonscars:

Moonscars is a 2D side-scrolling platform game with Soulslike elements. Players take control of Grey Irma, a warrior made of clay and bone, who must track down her maker, a being called the Sculptor. To find the Sculptor, Irma must fight through a world inhabited by creatures made of clay, where most human civilization is in ruins.Irma can defeat enemies by attacking them with her broadsword, which can cut through multiple enemies at once. Irma can also dodge or parry enemy attacks, with a parry giving the player the opportunity to both hit and push back an enemy. Each time Irma damages an enemy, she gains Ichor, which can be spent to regain hit points. Ichor can also be spent to attack with magical abilities, called Witchery. Each time Irma dies, she is resurrected at the last checkpoint the player used, and the power of enemies is increased. To alleviate this increase in enemy strength, the player is able to acquire items called Ichoral Glands from slaying foes, which they can use to reduce the game's difficulty.

Useful Tips of Moonscars:

Focus On Positioning And Crowd Control: In Moonscars, one of the first things that you'll come to realize is that your enemies are going to throw themselves at you in huge numbers. When you're just starting out, this can be brutal as it doesn't take long for enemies to completely demolish your health and leave you vulnerable. To get around this, use your ability to parry and dash to move around enemies and position yourself to one side of the crowd. That way, it'll be easier for you to take them down and come out on top of every sticky situation.

Learn Your Parry Timings: In any Soulslike, the ability to parry your opponents isn't only an easy way to get through most combat situations that you're faced with. It is also a showcase of your skill and mastery of the game. That said, Moonscars is no different in this case–learning how to parry here can grant you a massive edge in the game.Keep in mind that the parry timings in this game can be a little small for some players. Not to mention, it's almost a given that you'll need to maintain your composure the first couple of times since failing to parry almost always results in certain demise. But if you do get the timing down, you'll unlock one of the most powerful and rewarding experiences in the game.

Take Your Time At Dark Mirrors: Dark Mirrors are checkpoints that allow you to save your progress, rest up, and equip yourself for the journey ahead. And following the good old tradition of Soulslike games, your enemies will respawn once you rest up at a Dark Mirror. So, it goes without saying that Dark Mirrors have a ton of stuff for you to work your way through.Apart from the usual ability to warp between Dark Mirrors, these checkpoints also allow you to unlock new Witcheries. You can also utilize the previously mentioned Moon Rite and Clay Rite. Lastly, you also get to change your weapons here through the Weapon Rite.

Prioritize Healing Over Everything Else: As stated before, it isn't all too difficult for enemies to empty your health and leave you hanging for supplies. So, it is important to keep your health bar on the higher side throughout the journey. Ichor, the item that is used to heal Irma, can be collected by defeating enemies. That said, the health system is a little more complicated than that. The game has another mechanic called Witcheries that, in a way, consumes your Ichor, turning it into Spoiled Ichor. Now, while you can heal using Spoiled Ichor, you will not be able to use your Witcheries afterward. So, be mindful of the situation that you find yourself in–it may be better to heal first and position yourself properly than using your Witcheries or vice versa.

Player Comments of Moonscars:

This project was created out of love for the soulslike genre. Short 2D game immediately captivated me with its dark and atmospheric style. Moonscars utilizes a minimal color palette. A muted range of dark grays accented by red, creating a unique charm. The game's artist drew inspiration from the oil paintings of Old Dutch Masters like Rembrandt. Each frame of animation was hand-drawn, resulting in highly detailed pixel art.The protagonist, whom we play as, is Grey Irma. She is a knight of a special order. The game has good combat with an emphasis on parrying. There is standard attack, strong attack, special attack, skill, a dodge roll (dash), amulets, and various buffs. The healing system is quite unique: dealing damage to enemies fills a mana bar, which can then be used for spells or healing. This makes the gameplay dynamic and encourages an aggressive playstyle. Instead of bonfires, there are mirrors; instead of souls, there's bone dust. There are not many bosses, but each one is unique and interesting. Almost everyone has a second phase. Frequent deaths will trigger a Blood Moon, increasing enemy damage – a hardcore modifier of sorts. But it can be dispelled using hearts scattered throughout the levels.Moonscars is about a Lost Soul searching for its creator and the meaning of its own existence in this world. Each death serves as a lesson. We break and rise again, putting ourselves back together piece by piece. It's a story of betrayal, suffering, and revenge; a journey of trials and tribulations to become a great warrior. As Osho said, "To rise, you must fall; to gain, you must lose."I had fun fighting under the moonlight accompanied by atmospheric music. It's a shame the project lacked a bit of time and funding.I'd give it an 8/10.

Don't mind the negative reviews; if you are into metroidvanias, you should enjoy it.Yes, the game has some minor issues I see people complaining about in their reviews: there are "parry-me" telegraphs which are a bit confusing, most of the time, like for lunging enemies; you are better off just timing when the attack arrives on you. However, I recommend that you rely more on dash-dodging, except for some heavy-armored slow enemies, because they are more predictable, and the high damage output of the counter-attack saves you a lot of time while draining their larger health bar. There is a roguelite mechanic, too, with stacking boosts, which unlock after you defeat a certain number of monsters, and goes away when you die. As you stack buffs, it triggers a mode where the Moon gets angry at you (yes), and enemies are harder to kill. Problem is: it won't go back if you die. You must spend "glands" in a ritual to make it easier again, or you defeat a boss in this mode. I think those mechanics could be optional, but they don't ruin the experience, because they do not raise the dificulty that much: you just meet more of the "angry" variety of enemies on your way.Special attacks could be more devastating, because they are hard to hit and too risky to cast: the nice animations come with a somewhat long priming till the part when it really deals damage. Magic is okay, though, but costly enough to remind you that the main character is primarily a sword-maiden.That said, it is challenging, the visuals are very nice, the story is compelling, and none of the said "defects" was trouble enough to get in the way of the fun (which is what matters, after all, right?), and I am having a very nice time playing. Recommended.

At the beginning of the game you’re given a lot of tools. Wall jump, charge attacks, ground and air dash. You unlock spells that stay permanently and temporary weapons that go away after finding a new mirror(save point) but can repick the same weapon again. Also a charm system like hollow Knight, 3 at a given time. Combat is good, slightly unforgiving but not too bad. The story is kind of jank, not really feeling it. Platforming is fairly forgiving(no insta death like Blasphemous). Not seeing too much exploration beyond what it the main path(I’m still early so this may change). So far I’d say an easy 8/10. Feels more like a 2d souls game than a metroidvania so far.

Final Verdict:

Set in a world where the line between life and death is thin, you control Grey Irma, a warrior sculpted from clay, as she searches for answers to her existence and the truth about her creator. With tight, fluid combat, you’ll face off against monstrous enemies, navigate complex, interconnected environments, and uncover the twisted secrets of the world. Featuring striking, hand-drawn visuals, intricate level design, and challenging boss battles, Moonscars offers a deeply immersive experience for fans of dark fantasy and Metroidvania-style exploration. Each battle, each encounter, and every choice you make drives Grey Irma closer to her ultimate destiny.
