Introduction

dotAGE is a fun idle simulation game where, facing imminent disaster, players and several residents must venture into a secluded valley to escape the calamity and build a new village. Players will assign tasks to their residents, cultivate crops and raise livestock, gather resources to craft tools and weapons, and construct resource and residential buildings to continuously develop their village. The game offers different difficulty levels; as the difficulty increases, players will face more challenges, including natural disasters and the covetousness of enemies. Train your army and upgrade buildings to protect your village.

Useful Tips of dotAGE:

With more than 200 buildings in the game, dotAGE has plenty of valid tactics to success. But accessing them is easier said than done, since all of them are hidden behind a research tree. In order to research them, you will require special buildings that can generate research points each day, as long as a Pip is assigned to them. In time you will be able to upgrade these buildings, and they will also require a trained Pip to operate them.

Researching newer buildings is a must, but sometimes you can take a break from it if you need to allocate your Pips to something more important. If your village is starving, research won’t feed any mouths, so maybe put that Pip to work making some food. And don’t worry about wasting research points if you’re making more than the next research requires, you’ll be able to use them for your next project.

Instead of opting for the usual mechanics of opposing villages that you have to fight against, dotAGE focuses on another type of enemy, catastrophe. Every so often your village elder will have a premonition about a certain event that will affect your village in due time. At first these will be rather simple events that won’t affect a lot, but given enough time they will start taking a toll on your village and its population. You will also be presented with a tracker that will give you a decent estimation of all upcoming events and omens, all of it leading up to a final, bigger event. Manage to survive this one as well and the tracker will reset.

All of these events and omens will be a part of particular domains. These domains include Fear, Disease, Cold, Heat, and so forth. Each of these domains will generate a certain type of resource that you will have to combat with your own resource generation. For example, the Fear domain will obviously generate fear. After a certain event, Fear will start adding up daily, and you will have to generate Hope in order to prevail. After a set amount of days, both Fear and Hope numbers will be compared. The bigger your Hope number is, the better your chances of landing a good event. Fail to generate enough Hope and you will automatically be hit with a negative event.

While at first even negative events won’t instantly annihilate your entire village, they can still do a lot of damage. Villagers can become sick or stunned, forcing them to not work for a few days. Certain buildings can become unusable for a period of time as well. Your best bet is to always create plenty of resources to fight off particular domains, while also trying to constantly research better buildings that can offer more resources per day.

Player Comments of dotAGE:

Amazing game, quite unlike any other I've played, feels almost like a single player version of a resource-management board game like Catan. It's turn based and you can play it at your own pace, so I've found it particularly good for playing on the Deck while distracted with other stuff.

This game is about managing your resources and using them wisely. How good you are at managing will show by a good or bad event happening.Bad event: Your Village is wrecked by a hurricane, every building in its way is either heavely damaged or destroyed. Villagers unlucky enough in its path die an agonizing death which leads to you being short staffed and unable to feed your people, starving them and thus contributing to the next bad event, which may or may not be worse.Good event: a bloke found 3 copper up the mountain.10/10 great game.

The easy mode allows me to have a stress-free experience. Predictable and adjustable, just how I like it...However, if you prefer to EMBRACE CHAOS, this is the game for you. You might be just calmly taking care of your village when all of a sudden idk a fricking METEOR destroys half of it and Young Peter goes on a KILLING SPREE.I still have tons to explore as I only played 6 hours, didn't unlock half the content, (the game belonged to an old friend). I still hope to purchase it someday and have tons more fun!Couldn't recomend it more: it's the most chaos filled simulator out there. You certainly not get bored unless you really hate ALL simulators.

FAQs of dotAGE:

How do you train a Pip / make a new Pip?

Most game actions are performed by right clicking on a Building. Try clicking on a building where a Professional can work to train a new one, or a Dwelling to make a new Pippin.

How can I increase the building range of my village?

All buildings with the Road trait enlarge the village area. Build more Dwellings, and especially build more Signposts, as they enlarge your area even more.

Does the Wet ailment do anything?

The Wet ailment has no effect by itself, but many strong events have it as a requirement

How can I get food from Chicken?

By themselves, Chicken do nothing, you need a building to extract Eggs from them, or use Butchers to transform them into meat.

How does the range of Building Traits (such as 'Requires Dwelling Within 2') work?

The range counts orthogonal tiles (i.e. vertical and horizontal, no diagonals), and they must be walkable.Forests, Mountains, and Water tiles block building range for what concerns building Traits.Fishers use a special logic that allows them to swim, however.

How does the "Requires Cobblestone/Clearing Path to X" work?

These traits require you to build a completely connected path using pavements from one Building to another Building. The path must start from the first building and connect to the other one, and both must have the correct pavement below.

How can I disable Pips / Animals from eating a specific food?

Access the Food tab on the top left. You can disable a specific Food from being eaten by Pips or Animals independently.

Conclusion:

Step into the role of an Elder guiding a band of Pips in a post-apocalyptic village building experience where strategy and survival intertwine. This turn-based game blends worker placement mechanics with roguelite elements, allowing you to cultivate your village by assigning tasks like farming, animal husbandry, and tool forging.

  • Games have the unique ability to offer us both an escape from reality and a reflection of it. On one hand, they provide a refuge-a place where we can immerse ourselves in a virtual world, away from the pressures and challenges of our everyday lives. On the other hand, games can also bring us face-to-face with the complexities of real life, allowing us to experience its highs and lows, its moments of joy and sorrow, all within a controlled environment. This dual nature of gaming-offering both an escape and a confrontation with reality-is what makes it so deeply connected to the essence of the human experience. It allows us to explore, learn, and grow, while also providing a space for reflection and personal discovery.
