It very much exists in the same space as Undertale and Oneshot, it isn't subtle about those inspirations, but it doesn't feel derivative. It feels like something entirely its own, that understands what made those games incredible in the first place. The characters are absolutely delightful, they're all funny and have interesting backstories and often a degree of tragedy to them, which has to be Found. There's a sense of 'realness' to them, how they don't simply exist in one place, how they tangibly change. Being unable to get Joxxi to help me with something because she was being harassed by The Sword Man was a fun detail, it made it more immersive to know that these characters can simply *be busy* with things outside of me.

The game does something interesting where it doesn't really funnel you towards The Story. It just kinda dumps you into the world and boots you off to adventure. It's completely directionless, at least to begin with, but I think it works well because of the way the world is designed.

Speaking of, the world. The world of this game is. Incredible. It feels like one of the biggest, most vast worlds I've ever seen in a game, and yet it's really not that big! But it's just so jam-packed with interesting stuff. It feels like no matter where you look, there is something. A secret path, a shortcut connecting areas, a whole dungeon, a random NPC, a little gag, whatever. There's ALWAYS something, often something that might change later, so the world feels ALIVE and DYNAMIC. It's such a rich and fun world, in such a compact space, that it feels like a privilege to be able to wander around in it and familiarize myself with the layout. The world is so perfectly cohesive, except for the one area where it very intentionally is not.

The story is great. You spend the whole game finding weird little hints, bits of information that help push you towards theories about what's going on here, weird things that nudge you towards the right path. But, near the very end, it all coheres and creates a really clear picture of the history behind it all, how this world got Like This, and leaves a fulfilling ending at it all. The story and writing is often incredibly funny but it handles a lot of heavier themes - grief, the pursuit of purpose in life, what we do in the aftermath of the choices we regret - in a way that feels Real without hampering the tone of the game.

In short, Afterplace was an absolutely delightful game, a true Hidden Gem, one I'd call worthy of being referred to as a masterpiece. It felt like a privilege to be allowed to play this game, and I'm apalled that I only did because I grabbed it in a bundle on a whim. I should be hearing people sing the praises of this game wherever I go. I will rectify this issue, by being the one to sing its praises.
