Katawa Shoujo is a story-based casual game. Players embark on a heartwarming and sweet journey at a school for children with disabilities, following the protagonist, Hisao Nakai. There, players will encounter numerous characters with diverse personalities, living alongside them and overcoming challenges as they help them overcome their own shadows. Along the way, players will find friendship and love. The game features five distinct storylines, each influenced by the player's relationships with the female characters and the choices they make.

Troubled over his months-long stay at the hospital after his heart almost gave out and trying to adjust to his new surroundings, he is trying hard to find his place in the world. Her creativity is matched by her philosophical streak: Rin is fond of occasionally getting lost in thought and giving voice to abstract ideas about man, the universe, and other things that thoroughly confuse people.

Shizune Hakamichi

Comments:

I don't know if I'll ever go into the other routes, I'm just not the type of person who often replays/goes for all completion. However, Emi's really did leave an impact on me. For something that could have been handled so poorly, I think they really did a fantastic job at making it believable and genuinely deep. It's a story about treating others well, regardless of how they seem on the outside, moving forward even with huge roadblocks and not giving up. Emi, despite being a fictional character, made me feel like if she can do it, why should I give up, and there's definitely real stories like that.All the characters deal with their problems in their own ways and it's up to you to support them and just treat them like human beings. Everyone has issues, but there's no reason to give up.At least that's what the story said to me. That's what I took away from it.Aside from that, the art is decent, very nostalgic and 2000's vibes. OST is decent too, but it all comes together to be one very well put together and immersive story. Even though by all means it really shouldn't be.From the deepest and darkest pit of hell known as 4chan, a team crawls out of the blackened abyss and delivers us a majestic game. I last played in June 2020 and I remember my time with this game fondly all these years later.The characters are all well written and serve as inspirations that show the player that their disabilities don't define who they are, they don't want you to feel sorry for them, they all want to be treated like regular kids.The music is composed beautifully and is one of my favorite aspects of the game, special mention to the amazingly animated Act 2 cutscenes for each character that show the beginnings of your friendships with them with fitting music to set the tone.This is one of those rare games that will brighten and change your life for the better if you allow it to.Rest in peace, Raide, co-director and artist.

Wanted to wait until I played through every route to review, and I can now say for certain that this game is really something special. No visual novel has ever made me learn, and grow with the characters. Everyone is fleshed out and everyone has a compelling story you could get lost in forever. Thank you for one of the best visual novels I have had the pleasure of balling my eyes out over.
