Fun top-down hack n' slash metroidvania. The secrets can be hell to find. The game has improved it by adding square markers wherever secrets are, but some secret spots don't have it and/or have nested secrets. You don't lose anything on death besides your time spent walking from the last screen transition or checkpoint.Beyond that, I think the gameplay feels mechanically good. One of the upgrades that you can unlock (and should unlock as early as possible) is the chain dash, which grants a shorter cooldown for dashes that are timed properly. This single-handedly elevates the game from a B to an A for me because it just feels awesome to time your dashes. The unfortunate thing is that you don't really have open spaces to just go ham with it while exploring until you reach the southern part of the map, where the game reasonably assumes that you've unlocked the chain dash (because why wouldn't you).Other than that, the combat is nothing to wow at, but it's good enough.Visually, it's some pretty nice pixel art + some nice choice of colors.Where I think the game is flawed is the progression. Being able to explore any of the non-south areas and unlock any upgrade in any order has its perks, but I think a more constrained path would've let certain things be done in map design and difficulty (and the game is not particularly difficult).

The First and I think only "soulslike" I've found to have a soul of it's own. The Neo-Traditional color palette and the detail of the pixel art make for both a beautiful and serene world to explore while keeping things easily digestible from a visual standpoint. Combat is fluent and fun with ng+ and boss rush modes as endgame challenges. Soundtrack is spectacular. The game has very little dialog with the sparce NPCs you encounter yet it's storyline and worldbuilding is top notch and manages to fit a hell of a lot into a 10-20 hour playtime.

I was drawn to this game because of the artstyle (and I wanted to challenge myself with a difficult game for once) and the mystery surrounding the story. If you like getting your ass kicked constantly this is definitely a game for you.I struggled a lot with the map system and I still don't fully get it, also sometimes dying a few times changes where you wake up which might cause you to backtrack. Finding secrets like keys and hidden doors requires you to look at every nook and cranny as there are no hints at all and I just kinda found it a bit too overwhelming even if I usually love finding hidden secrets, so I ended up missing a lot of stuff...
