Play it over and over again, so it feels like you’re playing many different dungeon fighting games.

Take it slow: Wizard of Legend is fast-paced, and when enemies appear, you could be moments away from death if you're not careful. Try taking a slower approach and explore cautiously, sniping enemies from afar with ranged spells and kite them around, using the environment to protect yourself.

Learn the enemies: You're going to die a lot, this applies to any roguelike. It's best to use the first several (or dozen) attempts to learn what each enemy type does, and practice your own movement patterns with those enemies to avoid their attacks.

Strategize your targets: After you learn the enemy types and their attacks, you should prioritize which ones to take out first. For example, the archers can snipe you pretty good and do a good amount of damage, so I'd recommend taking them out if you can. Or if there's a spellcaster who does annoying AoE attacks that hurt, you should get rid of them first.

Use the environment: As you explore the dungeons, there may be objects that get in the way of hitting your foes, or they can provide excellent cover against annoying enemies. You can break almost any object, including barrels, lamps, paintings, crystals, and more. Use the walls and barriers as cover against enemies, and push enemies off ledges and into the pits below.

Invest in robes: Each wizard has their own wardrobe for holding their stylish robes. But did you know that these robes do more than just look good? They provide you with beneficial passive abilities, like faster move speed. Figure out your play style, and make sure you have a robe to go with it. For example, if you like close combat, a robe that boosts defense is nice.

Experiment with spells: Before you start each procedurally generated run, you can explore the town's shops for new gear. If you have the funds for it, buy a few spells to add to your arsenal and try them out. There's five elemental arcana (fire, ice, earth, lightning, and wind), and they all have their own benefits. Fire spells hit for more damage, while ice and lightning have additional effects like freeze and stun. Grab a few and figure out the kind of play style you want, and then create a build that revolves around that.

Its good, but it definitely feels like the game is more about maintaining control than anything else.There's big flashy spells, there's cursed artifacts that double your damage, but it all means nothing if a group of enemies get you stun locked in back to back hits - its even worse when you're on a small platform and you keep getting pushed off and infinitely stun-locked.

The easiest control spells were the summon spells. Get two of those in your hand and you can just cast them before entering a room to make sure the enemies are never ganging up on you. The spell that gives you enhanced attack speed is also fairly useful, and the whirlwind to sweep enemies together into a group where you can set up combos or just throw them down a pit makes short work of the game.Once you can reliably dominate the random encounters, the game is quickly beaten. Bosses are a little too predictable, and I don't think I've ever died to a boss. Died to mobs tons of times. Bosses are weak.

There's a version of Wizard of Legend that's 97% positive on steam. That version has more story, more lore, and a bunch of roguelike design staples like dash i-frames, slower and weaker enemy hordes, and tankier but less powerful bosses, correcting most of the complaints you'll see in the negative reviews. But it's also a much worse game.The goal of Wizard of Legend is to make you feel like a legitimate wizard fighting other legitimate wizards. It's a power fantasy where you start out pretty weak, with four base spells, and can be stunlocked into a curbstomp at any time by any basic enemy if you make a mistake. While frustrating and controversial, that's also what makes the highs and successes feel so good - once you get a build humming, once you understand attack and movement patterns, once you've got the muscle memory and aiming down, you become peak Avatar-state Aang, an unstoppable force of nature.The depth and build combinations are insane, with literally hundreds of spells. There are a ton of difficulty/challenge mode options, a great Boss Rush mode, and extra powerful "dark spells" unlocked in a slow trickle as you master the game.Wizard of Legend has a legitimately inspired and unique design ethos, and while that will absolutely not click at all with many people, I had a blast with it and highly recommend giving it a shot.

I might not have a ton of hours in this compared to the other rogue likes I have played, but this numbers in the ranks for best I have ever played. This is a roguelite that does not try to be anything other than roguelite about a legendary wizard. Once the meta-progression starts going, you can easily force wins every run, but that is also kind of the point. It allows you to take meta builds and dominate but it also gives you the tools to make almost anything work. You want to be the op mage, go for it. You want to be the high skill ultra no life perfect time dash shadow mage, do it. Everything is available, but you must place restrictions on yourself to keep it interesting. It also allows for all this play as you want freedom within the same basic systems, there are no ultra hard extra modifiers. The game offers incredibly strong core mechanics and then spells that dance around those mechanics, with gear that shoves stats in a direction (for the most part).The magic is magical, the card system is great, the item system is great, the gear system is grindy solid, the art is stylized, the animations flow into gameplay, the music is grand and epic but also magically fantasy. It all just works... except the multiplayer. I even found the story to be interesting and a really fun addition as a way to frame the game, but it is by no means a story game.This is one of those slept on gems I tell my friends to go play. This is also on my list of games I would love to get all the achievements in, but probably will not.
