Bloodstained is a popular role-playing game where players take on the role of a cursed orphan embarking on a journey to break the crystallization curse on their body. Gameplay of Bloodstained:

The game follows the Metroidvania-style gameplay of the post-Symphony of the Night games of the Castlevania series. As Miriam, the player explores a labyrinthine series of rooms presented as a platform game, fighting monsters and bosses and gaining keys or powers that let them explore previous areas that were previously impossible to reach. Miriam is able to use various weapons to perform melee or ranged attacks to defeat monsters, or special abilities granted by the shards she possesses from monsters to perform magical attacks. Miriam has both a health bar and a magic power bar. Health is lost to monster and environmental attacks, and should this drop to zero, the game is over, requiring the player to load the last save state. Health can be restored by using items or finding health drops from monsters or environmental pieces. Magic power is drained by using shard skills, and if out of mana, the player cannot use shard skills, but mana can be similarly regained as with health.

The player gains new weapons, armor and accessories throughout the game by defeating monsters and looting chests. This equipment provides various attributes to Miriam along with offensive and defensive bonuses. For weapons, this also set the type of attacks that the player can make. For example, short swords allow a variety of fast, close-ranged attacks, spears enable slow but long-reaching attacks, and guns allow for long-distance shots but with no melee possibilities. The equipment can be changed on the fly via menu screens. Shards are obtained by defeating monsters, and generally contain a power reflecting the essence of the monster it came from. The player can only equip a limited number of shards, but like equipment, shards can be swapped out on the fly.

Among the maze of rooms include save rooms, allowing the player to save their game and fully regenerate Miriam's health and magic power. Additionally, warp rooms allow the player to quick jump from one region of the map to another previously discovered warp room. Following the game's prelude, the player also gains access to a set of non-playable characters located at the start of the map that provide stores to buy and sell weapons, shards, ingredients and crafting services to make new weapons or upgrade shards. The game is presented in a 2.5D style, presenting the game in three-dimensional graphics but restricting movement to a 2D system. Igarashi stated the choice for 2.5D was to follow the style of previous Castlevania games, such as The Dracula X Chronicles and Mirror of Fate.

Features of Bloodstained:

Once you defeat your enemies you will have the opportunity to take control of their abilities. There are 100 shards of different abilities you can possess as Mirror and you can adapt your play style to your preferences by choosing things like summoning demon allies to use powerful spells of your choosing.

Extensive Arsenal: Craft and find hundreds of weapons, including swords, whips, guns, and boots. Each type of weapon changes your combat experience and gives you new strategies to win.

Gothic Visuals & Soundtrack: Michiru Yamane and other industry legends have produced an orchestral score to haunt you and the stunning 2.5D world you will get lost in.

Deep RPG Progression: Use the Alchemy system to turn your items and equipment into powerful meals that will give Miriam permanent stat boosts, and level her up and improve her stats.

Epic Boss Encounters: Demons fill the whole screen and will require strategy, timing, and the right gear to take down.

Strategies of Bloodstained:

Hit Every Wall: In The Legend of Zelda, you could tell if a wall could be blown up based on sound. Those were the days, hitting every wall like a maniac. Well, it’s time to do that again for Bloodstained, because there are a lot of breakable walls and even some floors.One simple hit will crack them. If that happens, keep plugging away for some tasty treats, usually in the form of what looks like parfaits. The red one increases HP while the blue ones increase MP.

When In Doubt, Grind It Out: Bloodstained is not the hardest Metroidvania out there, but there are some difficulty spikes every now and again. Thankfully, this is a RPG, so grinding is an option. It’s usually recommended to grind near a save point so that HP, MP, and data can be restored and saved quickly.Always go for the big guys. Simply slay them, walk to the next panel, and then walk back for some quick level bumps. Those blue and orange knights in the ship are good as an early example.

All Enemies Have Shards: It’s not explicitly explained in the game, but nearly every monster in Bloodstained has a shard. Before moving on, it would be a good idea to hack and slash away at an enemy on repeat until the crystal is obtained.You never know if the associated ability will come in handy or not. In order to keep track of which enemies have which shards and how many shards have been obtained, these details and more can be observed in the archival manual.

Fast Travel: There are two ways to fast travel around the castle. First of all there are the stained glass portals, which are marked on the map as green. These, of course, can only be used to travel between other green rooms.Then there are the Waystones one can purchase at the shop. These handy rocks will warp players back to the hub area. They are one way only, but handy in a pinch. There is also a villager that needs help by using them throughout the game, so always have a stash on hand.

Shopping Necessities: Here is a quick tip for the shops. First of all, use the actual shop for selling stuff and for buying Waystones and cooking ingredients. That is to say, don’t waste money on gear.Weapons and armor can more easily be crafted through alchemy, and enemies and chests offer good and constant payouts. There is never a need to buy anything with alchemy and loot drops abound.

Player Comments of Bloodstained:

Recommended....but on sale. With due respect to Iga, SOTN was a long time ago, and Bloodstained shows he's taken zero cues from all the similarly inspired games that have come since. This plays exactly like a HD version of the handheld Igavanias, which is what he pitched and got funded, but still - I expected more than a mediocre take on those games. The bosses are straight mediocre or bad, the symphonic rock soundtrack is predictable and mid, and the cell shaded 3D look is ugly as hell - they should have saved money on the soundtrack and spent the savings on actual, proper pixel art.If you're coming to this from the likes of Hollow Knight, manage your expectations. This plays like a game from the mid to late nineties. I respect the deference to retro design, but the genre has moved on. And I'm saying this as someone who played and loved SOTN when it was released. I get they were working to a budget, but this just feels like less than it could have been. Still, Bloodstained isn't a disaster like Mighty Number 9 was, so it could have been far worse. As it stands, this is just ... okay. Inoffensive. Decent. Iga is better than that, or at least he was. The genre has moved on since the nineties, it appears Koji Igarashi has not.

Ive played more on my xbox, But this game is genuinely very good. The amount of freedom and customisabilty is Fantastic. The amount of freedom in weapons moves and choice is a breath of fresh air. Its a great game if you dont mind a little grinding. The games story is nothing impressive but its a pretty good story imo. Its only problems are unlocking the true ending is insane. And the games difficulty can range from perfectly balanced to completly brutal at a moments notice. It also seem a little difficult for my computer to run. but i can say the game is fantastic on console. and if you can make your pc run it even if, you will have a good time even if you dont love metrovanias.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a textbook example on how a modern metroidvania game should be made. This game has everything going for it - solid storyline, good and versatile gameplay loop, many different enemies, decently sized map that's not too small nor gigantic, and a main character, Miriam, that you actually care about. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game even though it has a good amount of backtracking if you are looking to fully experience what it has to offer. What I honestly liked the most is how detailed your character customization is, you can fully edit Miriam's appearance and switch separate pieces of equipment that allow you to fully tailor your style of play. This game introduces a concept of special abilities, or shards as they are called here, which let you select the ones you like to play with or are mostly suitable to you, and this is a standout mechanic.On the downside, the game can feel a bit obnoxious with it's saving system since save rooms are scattered all around the map and there's no autosave, so consider saving very, very often. Trust me, you don't want to die after playing for 30-40 minutes just to get back to the starting point. That's infuriating and it happened few times to me.
