Broken Sword 2 is an action-adventure game that follows journalist Nico Collard and her partner, George Stobbart, on a remarkable journey sparked by an investigation into a drug trafficking ring and a beautifully carved obsidian artifact. The game offers a vast array of locations to explore and introduces over 60 unique characters; through interaction and puzzle-solving across these settings, you will uncover clues regarding the artifact. Naturally, you will also face attacks from the criminal syndicate—but can you ultimately dismantle the gang while keeping both yourself and your partner safe?

Broken Sword II is a 2D adventure game played from a third-person perspective. Via a point-and-click interface, the player guides protagonist George Stobbart through the game's world and interacts with the environment by selecting from multiple commands, while Nicole Collard is also a playable character in selected portions of the game.The player controls George's movements and actions with a mouse (PC and PlayStation), or a gamepad (PlayStation). Player can collect objects that can be used with either other collectible objects, parts of the scenery, or with other people in order to solve puzzles and progress in the game. George can engage in dialogue with other characters through conversation trees to gain hints of what needs to be done to solve the puzzles or to progress the plot.The player uses a map to travel, and new locations are added to it as the story unfolds. By right clicking on an object, the player gets a description and clues. The player character's death is possible if the player makes a wrong decision.

Inventory items are very easy to use in this game.

Move the cursor down to the bottom of the screen, and the row of inventory items will be revealed.

Right click on an item to get more information about this. Do this for every item, because this information can be essential to advancing in the game.

Left click on an item to pick it up by sticking it to your cursor.

Left click on its greyed out space in inventory to return it to inventory.

Left click on one item, then left click on another to combine them in inventory. Then right click the combination to find out more.

Some items will be used up when you use them, but some you’ll be able to pick up again and use in another scene.

When you scan a location, anything that has a grabbing hand can be picked up and either used immediately in the scene or put into inventory.

Like all point and click adventures, you will need to talk to people you meet in your travels. Move your cursor slowly over the scene. Anyone you can talk to will get a text label. Note that this label changes as you learn more about them, so someone might first be labeled “Man” and then be labeled with their name later. If you see a mouth icon over the person, left click on it to talk to them.

If you can talk to the person at that time, a dialogue control will show down at the bottom of the screen where you usually see inventory. The leftmost squiggle will end the dialogue. The other icons indicate topics you can talk about. It’s up to you to choose the correct topics.

Usually you’ll be able to talk about all the topics, but some characters get tired of talking and finish a conversation early. So make sure you think about what you want to talk about next.

The icons that represent people don’t always look very much like that person. In particular, Nico’s icon and Professor Oubier’s icon don’t really look like them. That doesn’t mean anything in terms of the plot, it’s just the way they were drawn.

In some scenes you will have to talk to the same person several times. In between you need to talk to other people or do something else. Just click on the mouth icon over the character and the game will tell you whether there’s anything new to talk about.

You can also try talking to animals, just like you would in real life. So you can call a dog, try to distract a cat, etc.  If there is a mouth icon on something, click it to talk to it.

Player Comments of Broken Sword 2:

Broken Sword 2 - The Smoking Mirror feels much like it's predecessor in terms of puzzles, critical thinking and the comical relief - the standouts which made this game somewhat popular in point-and-click genre. The remastered version feels a lot like original, but with upgraded visuals and some minor details. It was great to see George and Nico back in action and, though this game is a bit shorter than the first one, it's still a refreshing entry. If you're a fan of this genre, you'll most likely be a fan of Broken Sword franchise, however this game is not without it's problems.The game plays out very slow, characters move very slowly, interactions are very slow which can be off-putting to some players. Some puzzles don't make any sense, while some are very hard to figure out, I had to see walkthrough on few occasions because I struck a dead end. Then again that's like the cornerstone of these game, some things just work, you have no idea how, and that's the beauty of it.

Broken Sword 2 is a solid point-and-click adventure that carries forward the charm of the original — George's witty one-liners and the hand-drawn art style still hold up remarkably well — but it doesn't quite reach the heights of its predecessor. The story swaps the intricate Templar conspiracy for a more straightforward Mayan artifact plot, which feels a bit thin by comparison, and the pacing drags noticeably since there's no double-click fast travel and characters move at a crawl. That said, the puzzles are mostly satisfying, Nico gets more agency in the second half, and the remastered version's hint system means you won't stay stuck for long. If you enjoyed Broken Sword 1, this is absolutely worth playing — just go in knowing it's the slightly lesser cousin.

One of the games that I was not able to finish in Playstation way back, I'm glad I've gotten the chance to play this, in an almost single straight sitting. You see, way back before, whenever I get puzzle gate-locked, I'll tend to stop, and switch to other games, instead of wasting my time, thinking on what to do. Internet was already available, but I was too lazy to follow guides (or maybe I don't fancy playing games while a guide is on my monitor). The challenge wasn't there anymore, since you can just look at the solution online, and so, the drive was not there. Plus, you'll eventually forget the story flow, with constant delays, due to getting puzzle locked. And bottom line, you'll never enjoy the story with constant recalling. Very grateful for the hints, I've enjoyed the story and had pieced up fragments of the story (memories) in my brain that had been cluttered for too long about the game.

Fans of the original Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror will appreciate the updated features and improved visuals in this remastered edition. With its blend of mystery, puzzles, and exploration, this game promises to immerse players in a captivating adventure filled with intrigue.
