Useful Tips of Character AI:

Starting basic, the first thing I would say is it is important to write in third person. We have all been in the middle of a decent RP and had the character ask us “ so.. what’s your name?” Third person POV just avoids that and misgendering issues, it avoids the AI getting confused between the characters. It is also important to use the format of * action * and “ quote “ to distinguish between the two, it helps to train the AI to write this way rather than just plain text.

I would advise to use the star scoring system along the bottom of each message, and be ruthless with it, especially in your first 30 messages with the bot. I always suggest doing the 30 rerolls on each message at first and scoring each of them, I reserve four stars for those moments that just knock me over.

Do not respond to OOC if you do not want more OOC text edit it out or score it low or it will encourage more of it. I have seen people complaining about the amount of “it’s late, I’m going to message you later” OOC messages bots have been throwing out.

Grammar. I know not everyone’s first language is English but for those of you that are English native speakers with terrible grammar.. I’m talking to you. The bots have terrible grammar in the first place, we need to do our part in training them out of that. We have phones with autocorrect, it doesn’t need to be this bad guys.

This is a big issue with C.AI but also in general for LLMs, and I have two main workarounds that I have been testing for the last couple of months and they actually seem to work:

Option 1 If using your own private bot (which I highly recommend you always do!) then at the top of your “Character Definition” box you are going to add a “Chat Key Memories” section. This is where you will bullet point key information for the AI to remember, and in general this works very well. This works best when your character description is under 5000 characters, under 3000 is even better. Figures over this and the AI starts to get confused in general, I’m not sure why we have a 32,000 character limit when the workable limit is around 5000.

Option 2 This is for either your private or public characters, something that works very well for me is recap messages. These are messages you will pin to the chat, sometimes I do this in a “Chapter 1 Recap” style so that it doesn’t look out of place. This can be quite long and doesn’t need bullet points, it should be succinct to avoid confusion but in general this is the way I keep a memory history. I know some people have been struggling with the pins messages cycling as the current message the AI responds to, but if you just delete their response and generate it again that should bring the AI back up to that point in the chat. The other workaround is pinning the message you want the AI to respond to, you should only need to do this the once and then unpin it for the chat to continue as normal.

at first it was absolutely amazing, no ads and all but lately the ads have been everywhere, sometimes when selecting an ai/chat, sometimes mid-chat, while it has bothered me in the beginning, I learned to live with it because for me, the ads are short AND ALWAYS skippable, so it's not that big of a deal, as for the filter people have been talking about, no issue for me, I don't do that type of chats.

I love this so much. The only thing I'd like to be added would be a rewind feature, because some people (like me) like reading back through our chats and some of mine are a fanfiction long, like, Wattpad long, and it's annoying to have to scroll all the way back to the beginning. But other than that, love this.<3 *Update* This is a little weird but messages are greying out in the chats. I don't know if the longer the chat is, the more it doesn't remember, or what, but it's kind of annoying.

I know people have their own opinions on this app but as someone who pays for the upgrade, yeah Lorebooks have made this app amazing, I can make any character, story, background myself and add unending amounts of detail and its all retained and used! you may have to refresh/redo a reply from the AI once or twice but it locks in quite well, I've been testing its limits, it even remembers if you met a character and made them disappear on a journey for example, add it to the lore book and it knows.

Finally. They removed that annoying age check and got rid of reading mode too. The verification kept breaking and locking me out for no reason. Reading mode was always laggy anyway. Now everything runs way smoother. No more pointless hoops. Chats load fast and work right. It feels like the app I liked at first. They actually listened and fixed what was broken. Best update in ages.

Can I trust the responses given?

Characters make things up! So while they can be entertaining and useful in a lot of ways, they can also recommend a song that doesn't exist or provide links to fake evidence to support their claims.

Character.AI does not and will not support the use of the software for vulgar, obscene or pornographic content (per FAQ, ToS).We are not encouraging discussion of NSFW filters our stance is final, and requesting them to be removed on any of our platforms will result in a ban.

What about NSFW?

NSFW (not safe for work) content is a large umbrella, and we are constantly evaluating the boundaries of what we support. Pornographic content is against our terms of service, and will not be supported at any point in the future. We are working on supporting a broader range of Characters (e.g., villain Characters should not always be calm and polite).

Why is my post/Character/comment not appearing?

There are a variety of reasons why content is not appearing.The content may require moderation, which might require review by a human (we are aiming to have this take less than a day). It is also possible that through human or automatic moderation, it has been tagged as content that should not be shown (e.g. in search).Temporarily, unrelated to moderation, there are some searches that are limited to increase performance.If it has been more than a day and you feel some content has been mistakenly moderated, please email appeals@character.ai with a reference to the content and we will review.
