This game doesn’t hold your hand. The “right” choice is often hidden behind context, timing, and even your outfit! Keep multiple saves, experiment with all dialogue paths, and treat every conversation as a puzzle. The achievements are surprisingly narrative-driven, and they reward you for exploring every dark corner of the palace.

A beautifully made historical FMV Chinese game where you can't trust anyone, even yourself. You play as Wu Yauanzhao, starting as a fifth-rank Cairen to the Emperor. At the age of 14, she entered the palace in the hope of becoming an Empress one day. She'll meet many people during her stay there, and you'll have multiple choices to shape your personality and choose your answers wisely, as you'll always get a bad ending if the choice is wrong or you'll lose people's favor. There are romantic options too, where you can choose between the two princes; you either like them, or 'use' them to gain things much bigger, the Emperor himself. I like that the choices are not timed except for a few; you can think about what you are going to say next, and the video can be rewound from the bottom of the screen, or you can use the time map to restart any scene in the chapter. There are 16 chapters in total to enjoy, took me a little over 10 hours to finish them.

I have played several FMV games, and this one is among the best. It has a very good cast, a pleasant ambience, and a solid story overall.You may or may not like the ending; you might feel that toward the end things become rushed or crazy somewhat. However, the beginning and middle of the story are so good that I highly recommend playing it. Be prepared to die a lot throughout the story… that’s all I am going to say lol.If you want to explore different endings or dialogue paths, you can do so in a very fast and easy way. This is one of the game’s best features. You do not need to sit through hours of video to explore different options.One thing to be aware of is that the characters speak very fast, or sometimes say only a few words while the English subtitles span several lines. This can make it difficult to read everything in time. That said, the game allows you to freely rewind cutscenes with the mouse, which I used several times. There is also a slow/fast button, but it disrupts the audio, so I did not find it useful.Be aware that very few choices (maybe 1 out of 10) require you to perform an action within a certain time limit; otherwise, you can take as long as you want to think about your options. None of the time-based choices were stressful or difficult—just keep the mouse or controller in your hand.

I'm into FMV mostly because of the dating sim but i tried this anyway and it was a blast the story is 10/10 and the whole surviving pressure is thrilling. You will become smarter as you play, its very rewarding to overcome the schemes of your adversaries. The only down side is that I was not as motivated to 100% this game since the alterative routes almost always lead to a certain death. the whole purpose is to stay alive. Overall i recommend this game, its going to be hard to go back to others FMV with weak stories.

I love historical cdramas, and I'm so happy that I stumbled upon this game when looking through the steam store! I rarely write reviews, but I really enjoyed Road to Empress, and I can't wait for the second game! Highly recommed it! <3 The actors are very good, and the set, clothing and writing are fantastic!
