Placement is handled with straightforward taps and dragging, so rearranging a camp or experimenting with a maze-like defensive layout requires little effort.

The less welcome part is the waiting. Construction and upgrade timers repeatedly interrupt progress, encouraging regular check-ins rather than sustained play. That makes Call of Duty: Heroes best suited to players who enjoy managing resources, planning defensive layouts, and completing small tasks over time. Anyone coming primarily for the direct gunplay associated with the series will find the routine surprisingly passive.

Combat provides more momentum through 22 missions and attacks on other players' bases. Troops can be deployed anywhere outside enemy fortifications, after which they largely choose targets and fight by themselves. Picking the right entry point and troop mix matters, but the automated behavior limits how much influence you have once an assault begins. These are tactical raids in theme more than in execution.

Hero units improve that arrangement. Unlike ordinary soldiers, they can be repositioned independently and have special abilities that give the player something meaningful to do. Price is the clearest example: he can summon a helicopter gunship and put you behind its mounted machine gun. The resulting burst of direct control is brief, but it captures more of Call of Duty's personality than the surrounding troop deployment does.

Under its military uniform, this remains a conventional free-to-play base builder. The timers, resource loop, automated troops, and headquarters-gated progression leave little room for surprise. Defensive planning and hero powers supply occasional sparks, yet neither fully overcomes the repetitive management at the center. Call of Duty: Heroes is a respectable choice for strategy fans who prefer realistic weapons and familiar characters, but it is a poor substitute for the fast, hands-on combat of the main series.
