Story of Zero Sum:

Zero Sum is an adult visual novel with thriller elements. You're an ordinary manager who gets promoted to lead a secret project called "Icarus." Your new job is to make people pay more. Your tools are data, algorithms, and other people's weaknesses.

The problem is — you don't know who you're really hunting. And when the truth starts to surface, it'll be too late to run.

An ordinary testing department manager unexpectedly gets promoted to lead Project Icarus. His task is to finalize and bring to market the "Phoenix" algorithm — a system that analyzes user behavior and dynamically raises taxi prices during moments of vulnerability.

The more the algorithm learns about customers, the more money it makes. Soon, the protagonist realizes: his promotion isn't a gift from fate. It's a ticket to a world where morality and profit never align. Every decision changes not just the project's fate — but his own.

But the truth doesn't stay hidden forever. Someone already knows too much about the project. Someone is watching. Someone is waiting for a mistake. And when it happens — there's no turning back.

So far I'm liking this game a lot. The kinks and choices are great. I only wish some choices given in one scene was possible in another similar situation, but I understand why it wasn't. I've read most of the dialogue, and it seems fine. Characters don't bloviate too much, each person seems to have a unique and often extreme personality. And that's a good thing in the beginning of the game. The characters are interesting enough, and the story has great potential, considering we can shape the MC's approach to the whole premise. I only skimmed past some of the office talk. I got the gist of it early on, and the rest was just reflections upon a theme. Now that I'm hooked I will probably read more carefully, as long as the dialogue keeps my interest. I tend to lose concentration when I feel the conversation is going in circles and not moving a long. Things do move a long in this game, it was just that one office meeting that was boring. Too realistic, haha.

Developer Notes of Zero Sum:

I've been playing visual novels since 2018. For years, the thought of making my own kept coming back. But it always seemed too difficult for me.

Until I decided to just start. But start with what? Reading other developers' devlogs turned out to be the perfect answer. That's where you can pick up crucial knowledge — things that experienced developers take for granted, but that change everything for a beginner. By reading devlogs and watching YouTube, I began to immerse myself in the process.

About four months ago, I opened Daz3D, wrote the first lines of the script, and started building a world I had only imagined before.

It wasn't easy. I had no experience. Every step was a struggle — and a lesson.

I tried both Blender and Daz3D for rendering. I chose Daz. For the engine, I went with something simple, classic, and reliable — Ren'Py. For sound effects, I used CC0 assets from open sources. You have to respect the licenses.

The first renders looked… rough. Animations broke my spirit more than once. Clothing simulation? A nightmare. Object collisions kept falling apart. Frames that took forever to render.

But week by week, things started to click.

I wanted Zero Sum to reach people beyond my native language. So I added English and Spanish alongside Russian. Three languages from day one. You can switch languages anytime from the settings menu.

The Cost

I won't lie. This project took everything from me.

Sleepless nights. Burnout. Days when I didn't want to open Ren'Py again. Moments when I asked myself: "Does anyone even need this game?"

But I kept going. Not because I'm strong. But because I couldn't live with the thought that I never even tried.

What's Next

Episode 1 is just the beginning.

Right now, I'm already working on animations for Episode 2. The computer doesn't sit idle — while I write, the renderer works.
