LitRPG is a genre of regular literature in which, for one reason or another, people find themselves inside an adventure game with the typical mechanics such as discrete levels, stats, abilities, leveling up etc. Obviously these mechanics cannot be implemented on paper, so it's all scripted, written out by the author. The defining element of LitRPG is that the characters are aware of the mechanics, though this may be restricted to the main character. While the Chinese Xianxia genre can be considered a pioneer of LitRPG, the LitRPG genre as such was first introduced in 2013 by a Russian publisher and didn't gain widespread popularity before Dungeon Crawler Carl came out in 2020.

Even though LitRPG is a perfect match for AVNs, it has so far rarely been used as the basis for AVN plots. The classical way of combining RPG with AVN is an AVN embedded into an RPG. There are dozens if not hundreds of RPGMaker games following this formula, but only a few are worth any attention, even if you are unusually tolerant to mindless grind. A much more successful approach has been to graft actual RPG mechanics onto a solid AVN by implementing them in Ren'Py. As this is a non-standard use of Ren'Py, games done in this way are very diverse, including in how prominent and how fleshed out the RPG mechanics are. It is difficult, but if a game gets the balance right, it can be rewarding. It is not what this game is trying to do.

This is only the third game I have seen that is based on the LitRPG formula. To be clear: LitRPG means that we are not actually playing the game; the MC is. We can at most control the MC's way of playing through regular visual novel mechanics. E.g., you will not find the "turn-based combat" tag on a LitRPG AVN. This one is totally different from the previous two (one of which is a Xianxia Isekai and the other a regular Isekai) and much earlier in its development, but it shows similar promise. I rate both the plot and the graphics 4 stars, but as the story advances it's not unlikely that I can update my plot and overall ratings to 5 stars.

The setting is a version of the modern world in which dungeons with monsters appear in some places and some people have a 'mana core' that allows them to cull the monsters so they don't spill out into the overworld. These 'hunters' are organized into guilds and ranked according to their mana capacity. While some have various magical abilities and certain items can upgrade stats and abilities, people are not aware of the RPG mechanics as such and cannot level up through experience as in an RPG. Most people are stuck at the level they were born with.

What makes this a proper rather than borderline LitRPG is the fact that a traumatic experience in the prologue turns the MC into a 'glitched hunter'. The 'glitch' is the fact that the MC has access to an HUD as if he was playing his real life as an RPG, and unlike everyone else he can level up by collecting experience points.

At the same time that the MC gets his superpower, his non-biological sister (and first love interest) changes her status from girl without a mana core in hospital on life support to healthy A-rank hunter.

Unfortunately the developer is messing with the standard Ren'Py interface for saving. Version 0.1.2b has a bug that prevents normal saving. Only quick-saving works. This will be fixed in the next release. Meanwhile, we can use quick-save (only accessible through the quick menu at the bottom of the screen, and disabled while a choice is visible). Both quick-saves and automatic saves can be loaded normally.

The developer has promised an official walkthrough once the game has stabilized more. For now the main difficulty some people have run into is that they are not getting the first charm point, or none at all, and therefore miss an important scene at the end of the MC's first (single) dungeon run since he became a 'glitched hunter'. The solution is to put the freely distributable stat points into 'Sense' at the first opportunity to increase perception.The story has minor logic/continuity issues, but nothing that really gets in the way of immersion and enjoying the plot.
